World Summit AI: 5 early-stage startups show AI's potential across industries
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rarely out of the headlines these days, due in large part to a steady stream of controversies from many of the major tech players. Facial recognition software is increasingly permeating society without much regard for ethics or accuracy. And crashes and near-misses blighted the recent launch of Tesla's new Smart Summon feature, which allows drivers -- in theory -- to remotely beckon their vehicle in parking lots. There is a strong case for the suggestion that AI, in its current form at least, is more artificial stupidity than anything else. Nonetheless, AI is here and here to stay.

Artificial Intelligence takes front stage this week in World Summit AI
This week, Amsterdam will host one of the biggest events in the world dedicated to artificial intelligence. World Summit AI will take place in the city this 10-11 October, offering 140 renowned speakers and thinkers gathered to discuss the several ways AI will affect our way of living, from business to social and even ethical implications. After selling out in its debut edition last year, the event comes again not only renewed, but bigger as well. Early this year, the organizers announced that they had expanded their attended to more than 6.000, releasing additional tickets to accommodate for high demand. "For AI to be truly beneficial for humanity, it is crucial that people can trust its recommendations, judgements, and decisions," said Francesca Rossi, AI Ethics Global Leader & Professor of Computer Science, IBM Research & University of Padova.

9 Developments In AI That You Really Need to Know
Over 6,000 people are attending a conference focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) that opened in Amsterdam this morning. World Summit AI brings together corporates, startups, investors, scientists, academics, NGOs along with government bodies like the UN, EU and the World Economic Forum. Participants will be learning about some of the latest innovations in AI – the creation of human-like technology - that will transform business and the ethical issues that come with it. The event coincides with Artificial Intelligence in Europe, a report by Microsoft that reveals over half of the companies surveyed expect AI to have an impact on "business areas that are entirely unknown today". Yet only 4% of companies actively use AI suggesting European businesses, at least, have an enormous mountain to climb.

Empowering girls and women all over the world for AI for Good
For International Girls in ICT Day, and a few weeks ahead of the AI for Good Global Summit, ITU News caught up with Sarah Porter, CEO and Founder of InspiredMinds, World Summit AI, Intelligent Health, and Ada-AI, a non-profit dedicated to ensuring AI benefits all. Sarah is a humanitarian first-response trauma medic, ambassador for the Royal Marsden hospital in London and speaker for the United Nations on Lethal Autonomous Weapons. When I saw the story that a team of young girls from Afghanistan had against all odds made a robot but were then refused their visa [to attend an international robotics contest], it made me realise just how fortunate the Global North is with their right to free education in many disciplines including Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), unlimited access to wifi, and opportunities to learn how to code. The rapid progression of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by the wealthy corporations risks excluding the sectors of society that need it the most. Not only are women a minority in STEM education and in the tech teams building AI, the Global South is under-represented.

Who's Afraid Of Artificial Intelligence?
Can artificial intelligence replace the human brain? Will it? "Humans were are not built to spend more than two hours looking at a screen or scrolling through excel sheets. Humans are best at being human. Artificial Intelligence will do the rest." Telling words from Jim Stolze, Co-founder of aigency -- an Amsterdam-based company that recruits AI and humans for work.
